Welcome to our Sanctuary.
Cat Tail Acres is a SANCTUARY FOR FERAL AND UWANTED CATS. WE ARE NOT A TRADITIONAL SHELTER AND DO NOT ACCEPT SOCIALIZED ADULT CATS OR KITTENS WHO ARE MORE ADOPTABLE. The socialized, unwanted cats we have taken are because they refused to use the litterbox. We believe all of God's living and breathing creatures deserve a right to a good life. WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING MORE FERAL CATS INTO THE SANCTUARY AT THIS TIME AS THAT WOULD BE IRRESPONSIBLE, BUT WE HAVE OTHER RESOURCES WE
CAN TAP INTO TO HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO HELP FERALS. We also have a network of volunteers who can help with socialized adult cats and kittens
who may need to be rehabbed and re-socialized so they can be adopted.
We presently have over 100 feral and unwanted cats residing at our Sanctuary. We are in a house that was extensively renovated and cat-proofed to be a HOME environment where they live freely outside of cages and receive daily care and companionship from our caregivers and volunteers. They also really enjoy spending time in the large enclosed porch we built onto the back of the house! The majority of our cats were living on the streets fending on their own, in dangerous locations where they had to be removed for their safety, or in locations where property owners wanted them removed and would have taken them to be euthanized.
Some of our feral cats become socialized enough over time to be adoptable, but many are elderly so no one wants them. We are always pleased when we can adopt out one of our cats, and we also have sponsorships so people can donate to help us pay for the care of any particular cat a person may like but does not wish to adopt.
We also work with a variety of cat rescue groups and high-quality humane society shelters so that when we get information from caring people about kittens or socialized cats who need to be rescued or re-homed, we get that information out to our own volunteers or this large network. This way we regularly help even more cats find placements with volunteers, rescues, or shelters, so they are not euthanized. This has become one of our most important activities.
Another of our functions is Trap/Neuter Release (TNR), and we assist others in doing it as long as there are caregivers to provide food and some sort of shelter to a feral colony. We can loan people traps, teach them how to live trap cats, and even direct them to our veterinarian for very low-cost sterilization, vaccinations, and vet care. TNR is not the best solution to the feral cat problem however, since the cats must still survive outside in our inclement climate. It is our hope that more shelters will at east start devoting just one large room to ferals who are capable of being socialized over time by volunteers so they can then be moved into a shelter's adoption wing.
Besides making donations or sponsoring one of our cats, another way you can help us is to donate large, 11oz. cans of wet cat food. We have cat food donation barrels at the Pet Supplies Plus stores in Bloomfield Hills, White Lake, and Romeo, MI, and at the Premier Pet Supply pet stores in Beverly Hills and Novi, MI. We can also arrange to come to you to pick up cans of cat food that you have purchased for us. Please note that you should not donate cat litter into our food donation barrels as we do not use regular cat litter. Instead we buy pallets of compressed pine pellets (normally used for horse bedding) as it is less costly and works much better than litter. Additionally, you can link your KROGER Shoppers Rewards Card to our Charity, or link your purchases at AMAZON to us. Details on these two ways to help us are under the "MORE" drop-down menu above, and then at the drop-down link called "Shop & Save While We Earn Money Too".
Please help support our cause. We are not a wealthy charity and it costs around $30 a month per cat to cover all expenses which includes food, litter, veterinary care, upkeep of the house, upkeep of the van, utilities, etc. If you would like to contribute a tax-deductible donation to our no-kill Sanctuary, please send donations to the address below or click on the donate button below to contribute online through our PayPal account. Do remember though that PayPal will take a small processing fee out of your donation, and that you can arrange to cover that fee yourself if you wish. THANK YOU!
