Why We Need Feral Cat Sanctuaries
Cat Tail Acres Sanctuary believes our nation should not ignore the massive tragedy of feral cats in the USA; nor just continue trapping and killing them in shelters. Even though TNR-Trap/Neuter/Release is better than these two common methods, life is still hard and dangerous for cats who live outdoors, and they hunt and kill millions of birds and small wildlife annually. We hope more private humane society shelters and public animal control shelters will expend some of their resources on helping these ferals. Shelters should, AND COULD IF THEY SO CHOSE, have separate rooms or wings where ferals could be socialized and humanely housed (not in cages as that would undermine any effort to socialize them), so they can become adoptable.
Cat Tail Acres Sanctuary, is a 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt, nonprofit charity as ruled by the IRS and the State of Michigan, and has been in operation since 2006 (although the Sanctuary's Founder and President, Lisa Koester, has rescued a few thousand cats, dogs, and other animals over the past 3+ decades). Our current 196 cat residents came to us from all over Southeast and Central Michigan.
We are NOT a regular animal shelter that takes animals in, adopts animals, or then must euthanize those that were not adopted or were never adoptable. We are a "sanctuary" in the true sense of the word. We take in feral cats, and occasionally owned cats who have refused to use their litter boxes despite all their owners’ best efforts to help them. As the ferals we take in become socialized because of loving contact with their caregivers, we make them available for adoption. But otherwise cats live freely in a home environment until they pass away. All of them have been sterilized, vaccinated, and receive regular veterinary care.
We also educate people on how to live-trap and care for TNR’d: (Trap/Neuter/Release) ferals on site when they do not have to be relocated. Unfortunately, many locations are scheduled for demolition or the owners want the cats removed, so we try to find other locations for them, or take them ourselves as space allows. As part of our mission to assist others who are trying to help feral cats, we have arranged a deep discount from our off-site and on-site veterinarians for those whom we refer to them who need to sterilize and vaccinate cats or kittens.
All kittens and socialized cats from people who ask for our help, or whom we acquire as ferals but discover are already fully or partially socialized, are diverted to our associates at Cat Tail Kitties or other rescues, so new homes can be found for them.
We have been visited and praised by the MI Dept. of Agriculture shelter licensing division and the Director of Macomb County Animal Control. We also have references from reputable animal welfare organizations and rescues as to the quality of our sanctuary and the care we provide our beloved cats.
We regard the Sanctuary as a permanent, loving, forever home for feral and unwanted cats. Although most of the feral cats become socialized, many of them are not highly adoptable because of their advanced age. But we are open to adopting out the smaller number of our cats who are both socialized and more adoptable, so do consider us should you wish to adopt an adult cat. Or, please make a donation to help us pay for their care. Thank you.
